   Hello. If you have a problem with the power supply light not coming on when connected to the Elements external then it is NOT a faulty drive. It is NOT a bad power supply either. It is FAULTY electric circuit inside the casing. the HDD is OK. Take out the Hard Disk inside the casing and you can use it as a normal SATA hard disk. Now you have your data back.

   As a side-note, if you send this back to WD under warranty for a replacement your WILL lose your data. WD does NOT offer electrical repair services only Data Recovery partners. YOU DO NOT NEED THAT. Take the drive out of the casing like I say above and use it on any SATA compatible device.

   Excuse me Good Samaritan. Every time I boot up my PC I have to unplug my WD Elements HD for my pc to recognise it (the blue light then comes on). I have been told it is a power issue with my pc but what you’ve described is making me think you’re right.

   Is this what you’re talking about?

   In my case the green light went off as soon as i switched the drive on. That was definitely a faulty power supply. After I cut of the cable to the drive and rewired it into a spare PSU (some tricky sh**, I tell you the drive worked as intendet again. But in my case (the drive bought Nov. 2007) it is an IDE not SATA so now I wait for an IDE/SATA converter to put the Drive into my tower.
